Itinerary

Your Rwanda adventure begins with a morning pickup from Kigali International Airport or your hotel. After meeting your driver-guide and completing a short safari briefing, you will leave Kigali and travel east toward Akagera National Park. The journey takes you through Rwanda's beautiful countryside, with rolling hills and rural communities gradually replacing the busy streets of the capital.

Upon arrival at Akagera, you will check into your lodge and enjoy lunch before heading out for your first experience in the park. In the afternoon, take a boat safari on Lake Ihema, one of Akagera's most rewarding activities. As you cruise across the lake, keep watch for pods of hippos in the water, crocodiles along the shoreline and a variety of waterbirds around the wetlands.

After the boat excursion, return to your lodge and spend the evening relaxing as you prepare for a full day of wildlife exploration tomorrow. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Start the day with an early breakfast before setting out with your guide for a full-day game drive through Akagera National Park. The cooler morning hours provide excellent conditions for wildlife viewing, and your guide will focus on areas where animals are most likely to be active.

As you explore the park's savannah, woodland and wetland habitats, you may encounter elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, antelopes and hippos. Akagera is also home to lions and rhinos, while the elusive leopard may occasionally be spotted with a little luck.

Around midday, stop for a picnic lunch in a designated area before continuing your game drive into the afternoon. The changing light and quieter afternoon atmosphere often create excellent opportunities for photography as wildlife gathers around water sources and open plains.

After breakfast, check out of your lodge and begin the journey north toward Volcanoes National Park. As you leave Akagera behind, the landscape gradually changes from open savannah to Rwanda's characteristic green hills and cultivated countryside.

Continue through Kigali, where you will have a short stop for lunch and, depending on your schedule, an opportunity to experience part of the city before continuing toward Musanze.

By late afternoon, you will arrive in the Volcanoes region, where the dramatic Virunga volcanoes dominate the horizon. Check into your lodge and settle in for the evening. Your guide will also brief you on the following day's gorilla trek, including what to wear, what to carry and what to expect during the forest hike.

Enjoy dinner and rest early in preparation for one of the most memorable experiences of your Rwanda safari.

After an early breakfast, you will drive to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for registration and a pre-trek briefing. Here, your guide and park trackers will provide information about the gorilla family you have been assigned to visit before you begin your trek into the forest.

The hike takes you through the beautiful montane vegetation of the Virunga Mountains. The length and difficulty of the trek can vary considerably depending on where the gorillas are located, so your guide will set the pace according to the conditions and the group.

Once you find your gorilla family, you will have a rare opportunity to observe these magnificent animals in their natural habitat. Watch the adults interact, young gorillas play and the silverback protect and supervise the family. The encounter is limited to the permitted viewing period to protect both visitors and the gorillas.

After leaving the gorillas, trek back through the forest and return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation. The remainder of the afternoon is free to enjoy the surroundings or participate in an optional cultural experience.

Enjoy an early breakfast before returning to the park headquarters for another primate experience — golden monkey trekking. These lively primates move through the bamboo forests of the Virunga region, and following their movements offers a very different experience from the previous day's gorilla trek.

After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch before beginning your journey south toward Nyungwe National Park. This is a long but scenic drive through Rwanda's countryside, passing terraced hills, villages and spectacular mountain landscapes along the way.

Arrive in the Nyungwe area later in the day and check into your lodge. The evening is kept relaxed so you can rest ahead of the following morning's early chimpanzee trekking experience.

Your day begins early as you prepare for chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest. After an early breakfast or packed breakfast, meet your guide and trackers before entering the rainforest.

The forest comes alive in the early morning as you search for habituated chimpanzee groups. Listen for their calls as your trackers follow signs of their movement through the dense vegetation. Once the chimpanzees are located, you will have time to observe their behaviour and photograph them from a respectful distance.

Nyungwe is also home to several other primate species, so keep your eyes open throughout the trek for monkeys moving through the forest canopy.

After the trek, return to the lodge for refreshments before beginning the journey back toward Kigali. If time permits, an optional visit to the Nyungwe Canopy Walkway can be arranged before departure.

Continue toward Kigali, arriving later in the evening. Check into your hotel, enjoy dinner and relax after the day's long journey.

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast at your hotel before beginning your final experience in Rwanda. Depending on your flight schedule, your guide will take you on a short Kigali city tour, giving you an opportunity to experience the capital before your journey comes to an end.

You may visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, explore a local market or browse locally made crafts and souvenirs. Your guide will tailor the experience around your departure time.

After lunch, you will be transferred to Kigali International Airport for your onward flight, marking the end of your 7-Day Ultimate Rwanda Gorilla, Wildlife & Primate Safari.
