UGANDA’S SMALLEST GORILLA PARK
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Volcanoes, mountain gorillas and golden monkeys on the edge of the Virungas
Why Visit
Uganda’s smallest national park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park covers just 33.7 km² in the far southwestern corner of the country (Kisoro District). Gazetted in 1991 (after earlier protection as a game sanctuary from 1930), it protects the Ugandan slopes of three dramatic Virunga volcanoes Mount Muhabura (4,127 m), Mount Gahinga (3,474 m) and Mount Sabyinyo (3,645 m). The park forms part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area shared with Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Virunga National Park.
Despite its compact size, Mgahinga is a critical sanctuary for endangered mountain gorillas and the rare golden monkey. Its steep volcanic slopes support montane forest, bamboo and alpine vegetation, while offering panoramic views across three countries. The park also holds deep cultural significance for the indigenous Batwa people, the original forest dwellers of the region.
Mountain Gorilla Trekking
Home to one habituated gorilla group (Nyakagezi), offering a quieter, more intimate tracking experience than the larger groups in Bwindi.
Golden Monkey Tracking
The only national park in Uganda where visitors can track the endangered golden monkey in its bamboo habitat.
Volcanic Landscape
Three extinct volcanoes rise above the forest, providing day hikes with spectacular views into Rwanda, Congo and across the Albertine Rift.
Batwa Cultural Experience
Guided trails with the Batwa community reveal traditional forest knowledge, hunting techniques and the cultural history of the “first people” of the Virungas.
